I continue to prepare for the Olympic year. I feel strong after six weeks of altitude training in Albuquerque, NM. I have won the St. Patrick's Day 5K in Dublin a couple of weeks ago. It was good to go out there and see what kind of shape I’m in after such hard weeks of training. My next race will be the Hungarian Cross-Country National Championships on 12 April. I will have a couple of weeks to get ready for the outdoor season which starts in May. After a few tune-up competitions over shorter distances (1500, 3000) I will try to run the 5000m qualifying time in the middle of June.
Milan hosted the European 1st League Group B competition last weekend. Balazs Csillag took double duty by running both the 1500 and 3000 meters. He finished 4th in the 1500m on Saturday, while collected 4 points (5th place) for his nation over the longer distance on Sunday. Both Hungarian men’s and women’s teams finished 5th and stayed in the 1st League.
An outstanding field lined up for the 1st Domaine Gróf Zichy 10Km road race in Szekszárd. Balázs Csillag, the 5000m Hungarian record holder, together with the local Sportélmény Foundation organized the event.
Runners competed on a downtown, 1350m circuit which is well known to the locals from the Gemenc Cycling Grand Prix which is a nationally renound bicycle race. Before the Elite 10Km, several events, including age-group and relay competitions, took place with over 500 runners.
The Elite 10Km included the best Hungarian distance runners. Anikó Kálovics, currently 14th on the Road Running World Ranking list, headed the women’s field. Kálovics cruised to a comfortable victory ahead of Simona Staicu, while Tamás Tóth took home first place in the men’s race.
